This prompt for today’ song is a little different, as we are looking way back into the 1920s for what songs were being played then. Thanks, Bee, for all the fun prompts! 🙂

I had no idea there were so many songs from that decade, but there was a long, long list of them. Of course I never heard them at the time (haha) but have heard some of the since, maybe by cover artists, and updated versions.

“Side By Side”, was written by Harry Woods, in 1927. This song was recorded many times by various artists over the years, and this is one of them, by Kay Starr, which is one of the better known versions, which she did in 1953. It was arranged to be by two voices, and both of them were her, singing a duet with herself.

For some reason the video takes about 20 seconds before it starts playing.

Oh, we ain't got a barrel of money
Maybe we're ragged and funny
But we'll travel along, singin' a song
Side by side
Don't know what's comin' tomorrow
Maybe it's trouble and sorrow
But we'll travel the road, sharin' our load
Side by side
Through all kinds of weather
What if the sky should fall
Just as long as we're together
It doesn't matter at all
When they've all had their quarrels and parted
We'll be the same as we started
Just travelin' along, singin' our song
Side by side

See that sun in the mornin'
Peekin' over the hill
I'll bet you sure, it always has
And it always will
Well, that's how I feel about someone
And somebody feels about me
We're sure in love with each other
And that's the way it's gonna be

Oh, we ain't got a barrel of money
Maybe we're ragged and funny
But we'll travel along, singin' a song
Side by side
Don't know what's comin' tomorrow
Maybe it's trouble and sorrow
But we'll travel the road, sharin' our load
Side by side
Through all kinds of weather
What if the sky should fall
Just as long as we're together
It doesn't matter at all
When they've all had their quarrels and parted
We'll be the same as we started
Just travelin' along, singin' our song
Side by side

    • Thanks, Jim. I looked at a list of songs and was surprised at how many there were, and that I’d heard of a lot of them at one time or another. Must be the songs written all those years ago really were classic, and had staying power for so many artists to cover them so many times. 🙂

    • Thanks, Bee! There are some really good songs from way back then, so I was happy to see some listed. I’ve only heard the newer versions, I expect, so it was interesting to see how far back they really went. 🙂
