96 Tears – Song Lyric Sunday – Crying/Sadness

Today for SLS, we have the prompt word = crying/sadness. Thanks for hosting this fun challenge, Jim.

Thanks also go to Mary B who blogs at http://www.jinglejanglejungle.net for her suggestion of the prompt.

“96 Tears”, by ? and the Mysterians (also sometimes written out as Question Mark and the Mysterians), was released in 1966, from their album of the same name. It was written by Rudy Martinez, who’s stage name is ?. It is on the Pa-Go-Go /Cameo-Parkway label.

I wonder if he was the first to use a symbol for his name?

Anyway, I read the Wikipedia article about this band, and it was pretty interesting. The band members were children of Mexican migrant workers living in Michigan, and they formed their band in their garage. So, they were considered a garage band.

I don’t like just repeating what the Wiki article says, so I’ve included the link in case you’d like to read more about them.

I really like this song, and I think I have the 45 record of it. I’d go look, but it’s stored out in the garage with all my other ones, and it’s cold out there today. Meanwhile, hope you enjoy this really cool video I found. 🙂

Thanks for visiting! Peace ☮️

    • Thanks, Jim!
Yes, that organ playing really sets this song off. Hah…the original title…some people can read anything into a title, and I’ll bet it wouldn’t cause a stir these days.

    • You’re most welcome. I hadn’t heard this one in a long time, either. Just ran across it while looking at lists of crying songs. Glad I found it, though, as I do remember hearing it a lot back when it came out. 🙂

  1. Such a great song! Is it wrong for me to be chair-dancing to a sad song? bwahahaha! I don’t know that I have ever known who the artist of this song was, but I know that I have enjoyed the song for many years.

    • I know! That intro just gets my foot tapping, so chair dancing is great, too! Yeah, guess the guy was wishing revenge on his girl, wanting to make her cry, but super song anyway! Thanks Mary! 🙂

    • Thanks! That organ music just draws me right in. As they used to say on American Bandstand, it has a good beat and you can dance to it. Who knows, I probably did dance to this one many years ago. 🙂
