A to Z Blog Challenge 2018 – Letter P

A to Z Blog Challenge 2018 – Letter P

Welcome to the 2018 edition of the A to Z Blogging Challenge!

All through the month of April, the challenge asks us to blog every day (except Sundays), and to go through the alphabet A to Z, connecting our posts to the letter of each day.

My idea for this time, my 5th to participate, is to showcase a book or two each day, and provide a tiny bit of information about them. These will not be a full book review, but just saying what it is about, and if I liked the book or not.

These books are mostly books that I already have on my shelves, and have read, or are on my to be read stacks. There will be a very few of them that I don’t already own, or have read.

I will also post a quote each day that has something to say about books, or reading.

Hope you enjoy, and maybe see a book or a few that you might want to read, too.

“The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio”, by Terry Ryan, is written by Evelyn Ryan’s sixth son. Evelyn was the enterprising housewife who, in order to keep her large family running, entered every contest she could find. This was back in the 1950s and 60s, when there were plenty of contests on TV, radio, and newspapers.

Evelyn had a knack for writing jingles, and was very good at many of the contests she entered, winning trips, supermarket sweeps, household items of all kinds, and even large amounts of cash.

There are family photos included, and lots of humor in her life.

This is one I read quite a long time ago, and now I want to read it again.

“Post Secret,” by Frank Warren, is his compilation of a project he started. Being fascinated with the therapeutic healing power of art, he wanted to see what happened if he left blank post-cards in random places. These were addressed to himself, and his only instruction was to reveal a never before told secret, and mail the card back to him. He was overwhelmed by the response. The cards kept coming, some even had elaborate decorations on them.

This book is a look into what anonymous people sent to him. Most of the pages are filled with the post-card art, and secrets of all kinds.

I got this book for Christmas, from my daughter, and am still looking through it. It is very good.

    • Thanks, Janet! You’ll be amazed at what people shared on their mailed in post-cards. Who knows if they told the truth, but so interesting to read them. 🙂

  1. I remember the prize winner book, mainly because my dad grew up in Defiance! My grandparents lived there until they died, and I actually visited there several summers while growing up.

    • Thanks so much, Jen! I’m so happy you came by for a visit, and liked the sound of these books. It’s fun to find more books to add to our TBR list! I know mine gets longer all the time. 🙂
