A to Z Blog Challenge 2018 – Letter O

A to Z Blog Challenge 2018 – Letter O

Welcome to the 2018 edition of the A to Z Blogging Challenge!

All through the month of April, the challenge asks us to blog every day (except Sundays), and to go through the alphabet A to Z, connecting our posts to the letter of each day.

My idea for this time, my 5th to participate, is to showcase a book or two each day, and provide a tiny bit of information about them. These will not be a full book review, but just saying what it is about, and if I liked the book or not.

These books are mostly books that I already have on my shelves, and have read, or are on my to be read stacks. There will be a very few of them that I don’t already own, or have read.

I will also post a quote each day that has something to say about books, or reading.

Hope you enjoy, and maybe see a book or a few that you might want to read, too.

“Once Upon a Quinceanera “, by Julia Alvarez, is subtitled, ‘Coming of Age in the USA’.

The Quinceanera is a Latina tradition where when a girl reaches the age fifteen, a lavish party is given her. These parties can be way over the top, in that enormous amounts of money is spent on food, decorations, and the ultimate party dress. It seems it can be even more extravagant than proms or weddings.

The author explores the tradition, and has interviewed several families, and also tells of her own personal Quinceanera.

“Other People’s Dirt”, by Louise Rafkin is her memoir of being a housecleaner. She likens her housekeeping duties to an archeologist, seeing it all in her clients houses. As she works, she tries to piece together a story of their lives, how they live, and secrets they keep hidden. In this book she ‘dishes the dirt’ on all she finds, from celebrity households, to crime scene clean-ups, corporate offices, and more.

This book is very easy to read, entertaining, and an eye-opener into the world of professional housecleaners.
