We’ll Sing in the Sunshine – Song Lyric Sunday – Stay IMG_1345

Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 4/15/18

For SLS today, Helen has asked us to consider songs with the word “Stay”. Thanks, Helen!

***

At first I couldn’t think of any songs using the word ‘stay’ in the title or in the lyrics. I got to looking around on here, and finally found a few. That said, I didn’t go with any of them. The more I kept thinking, I did remember an old song that I’ve always liked. This one below. Then I kept thinking of more, and even heard one I hadn’t seen mentioned, on the radio. Now, I had too many!

Anyway, hope you enjoy this one. 🙂

We’ll sing in the sunshine
We’ll laugh every day
We’ll sing in the sunshine
Then I’ll be on my way

I will never love you
The cost of love’s too dear
But though I’ll never love you
I’ll stay with you one year

And we can sing in the sunshine
We’ll laugh everyday
We’ll sing in the sunshine
Then I’ll be on my way

I’ll sing to you each morning
I’ll kiss you every night
But darlin’ don’t cling to me
I’ll soon be out of sight

But we can sing in the sunshine
We’ll laugh everyday
We’ll sing in the sunshine
Then I’ll be on my way

My daddy he once told me
“Hey, don’t you love you any man
Just take what they may give you
And give but what you can.”

You’ll laugh everyday
You’ll sing in the sunshine
Then be on your wayAnd when a year has ended
And I have gone away
You’ll often speak about me
And this is what you’ll say:We sang in the sunshine
You know we laughed everyday
We sang in the sunshine
Then she went on her way

  1. I really like this! Wasn’t sure what the lyrics were trying to say at first – it sounds kind of harsh about not loving someone/ not sticking around, but it’s actually strangely positive! Great choice.

    • Thanks! Glad you liked it. It does seem a bit mean to say she’ll only stay a year. But, being up front with it, no strings attached, no misunderstanding, they will be free to enjoy each other’s company for that year. Secretly, I always thought she’d change her mind and actually stay. 🙂

      • It’s fun to look back on the clothes and hair styles of those days. I was a teen in the 60s, and there were so many good songs. Now, each time I hear one of the ‘oldies’ it takes me back to whatever I was doing. 🙂

  2. I really love her voice! It’s also such a beautiful song! I can just imagine singing in the sunshine and laughing every day. Great lyrics and great song. Thanks so much for sharing!
