Song Lyric Sunday Theme for 2/11/18

***

This week for Song Lyric Sunday, Helen has suggested songs about phones or phone calls. Thanks, Helen!

The one I chose to feature has to do with telephones, and the lines that carry the transmission of the calls. This song tells about the people who go out to repair the lines…or at least this one, who is feeling lonely. He thinks he can hear his love’s voice in the whine of the wind through the lines. Have you ever heard this eerie noise? I have, and it is a lonely sound. You can imagine thousands of voices coursing through the lines, all at the same time.

Now I probably should look up some technical information about how our phone calls happen, but this isn’t what I want to do. I have no idea how it works. I’m pretty sure telephone lines are still used, since I see the telephone poles, but as for cell phones, maybe it goes through the air, or bounces off some satellite up in space? Well, that’s something to look into another day.

For now, just enjoy this classic song, from Glen Campbell.

“Wichita Lineman”, by Glen Campbell, was released from his album of the same name, in 1968. It was written by Jimmy Webb, and is on the Capitol label.

I am a lineman for the county
And I drive the main road

Searchin’ in the sun for another overload

I hear you singing in the wire
I can hear you thru the whine

And the Wichita lineman
Is still on the line

{Hook}

I know I need a small vacation
But it don’t look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south
Won’t ever stand the strain

And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time

And the Wichita lineman
Is still on the line

{Bridge}

And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman
Is still on the line

    • Thanks, Tara! It is a great song, and I don’t think it would be the same about cell phones, either. So many changes for the better in the development of telephones. 🙂

  1. Glen Campbell… he has such a great voice. I’ve never really thought of the whine of the telephone lines, but I have heard it and it is interesting to think about, isn’t it? Great pick! Thanks for sharing!

    • haha, Felicia! Shhh, I won’t say a word about your secret! I know I had crushes on all kinds of singers and actors back in the day. Glad I could bring back some memories of a great song for you! 🙂
